Scarborough – the Queen of Yorkshire coast resorts

Award winning sandy beaches, a stunning coastline, wonderful family attractions and some of the best live events in the country – you’ll find all this and much more besides in Scarborough.

Scarborough has two contrasting bays – South Bay, with its amusements, cafés and gift shops, and quieter North Bay with its sweeping views up to the Castle. Both are famous for their golden sandy beaches, perfect for building sandcastles, paddling, water sports, donkey rides and sunbathing. At low tide, explore the rock pools and enjoy acres of space on the firm sand.

Scarborough Castle is a former medieval fortress, situated high on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea and the two bays – it’s well worth visiting, especially with a Transdev Treats voucher from your Coastliner bus driver giving 10 percent off entry.

Save yourself the walk back up from the beach and use one of the town’s two cliff tramways. The oldest one in the UK links The Spa with the recently revitalised South Cliff Gardens, while the Central Tramway runs from the seafront next to the Olympia leisure centre up to St Nicholas Street, next to the Grand Hotel and handy for the town centre.

Or stay on your Coastliner bus to visit beautiful Peasholm Park. Opened in 1912, the park’s Oriental themed design was the idea of forward-thinking borough engineer Harry W. Smith – the island, topped by its pagoda was inspired by the scene depicted on the willow pattern plate. The normally peaceful scene changes dramatically during the school summer holidays, when on Monday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons, the Naval Warfare display takes place – see 20ft manned warships do battle with aircraft, explosions, sinkings and more!

Opposite Peasholm Park is Scarborough Open Air Theatre, an 8,000 seater venue which stages a season of live music starring many of the biggest names in rock and pop. This is also where you’ll find the North Bay Railway, Britain’s biggest miniature railway and a favourite with visitors since 1931, and an ideal way to reach the Sea Life Centre.

More Scarborough attractions include the Alpamare Water Park and the Scarborough Spa – its Sun Court is a fine spot on a warm afternoon to grab a deckchair and relax!

Travel to Scarborough on Coastliner 843 from Leeds, Tadcaster, York and Malton – our main stop for the town centre and South Bay is in front of the railway station. Or stay on board to reach Peasholm Park, with the North Bay and Open Air.
