Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well

England’s oldest visitor attraction and a much-loved Knaresborough landmark, Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well has been welcoming people since 1630. Mother Shipton was born in a cave on this site in 1488 – her prophecies of future events, including the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and the Great Fire of London in 1666, made her famous. A picturesque one mile walk alongside the River Nidd brings today’s visitors to Mother Shipton’s Cave and the unique Petrifying Well, where cascading waters turn everyday objects into stone – as if by magic!

All of our electric buses on The 1 between Harrogate and Knaresborough run past the entrance to Mother Shipton’s. Hop off the bus at Knaresborough High Bridge and the attraction is a few steps away – look out for the black and white chequerboard building and you’re there!
