Halifax – the friendly town among the valleys

Halifax is Calderdale's largest town, with stunning Victorian architecture and a strong industrial heritage.

It’s home to the unique Piece Hall, Eureka! The National Children's Museum, and the beautiful Halifax Minster. You’ll also find markets, independent and high street shops, theatres and many great places to eat and drink.

A Grade I listed Georgian masterpiece and the oldest remaining Georgian cloth hall in the world, the breathtaking Piece Hall is a must-see when you visit Halifax.

The Piece Hall opened on New Year’s Day in 1779 as a public market for the sale of “pieces” (a 30 yard length of fabric produced on a handloom) of woven woollen kersey cloth and cost over £9,000 to build, equivalent to over half a million pounds in today’s money.

Today, its huge open-air courtyard is surrounded by unique and boutique independent shops, bars, cafes and a restaurant. The stories of Georgian Halifax are told in the specially created exhibition spaces, while the central courtyard is a spectacular venue for a year-round events programme of live music, dance, film and spectacle.

The Piece Hall has also doubled up as a filming location for big-name productions, including TV’s Gentleman Jack and Last Tango in Halifax, and movies such as Brassed Off and The Dresser.

Halifax is easy to reach by bus with us – options include Great Northern Line 502 from Keighley, Route 343 from Huddersfield (536/537 on Sundays) and 587 over the Pennines from Rochdale.
