Follow the Romans and Vikings to beautiful York Minster
York is an amazing, vibrant city with Roman and Viking roots and is unlike any other city in the country. As King George VI remarked: “The history of York is the history of England”.
Its ancient City Walls surround historic streets filled with family attractions, exciting events, 30 world class museums and shops with something for everyone.
York’s most famous landmark is its Minster. One of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals, York Minster has been at the centre of Christianity in the North since the 7th century and today remains a thriving church, as well as an international visitor attraction in its own right.
Explore the Minster’s rich history, from the Roman emperor who changed the course of Christianity to the fires which threatened this great building, including a devastating blaze which severely damaged the South Transept in 1984, believed to have been started by a lightning strike.
The Undercroft Museum tells the story of two millennia of York’s history through digital displays and artefacts from the cathedral’s historic collection, never before on public display.
York Minster also has its own shop, which stocks exclusive products inspired by this magnificent building, from a tiny wooden church mouse to silver and gold jewellery depicting its famous Rose Window.
Travel on Coastliner 840 or 843 from Leeds, Tadcaster, Malton and the Yorkshire Coast to York – leave the bus at Rougier Street, from where it’s a five minutewalk across Lendal Bridge to reach York Minster.
