Pretty Thornton-le-Dale – for walks, tea shops, and … Bangers and Cash!

The picture-postcard village of Thornton-le-Dale is a well-established favourite destination for day trippers, with its cosy cafés, pubs and tea rooms.

The village is also a starting point for several easy to follow walks, such as the 90 minute stroll along the Ellerburn Valley, beginning outside one of Yorkshire’s most photographed houses – the traditional Beck Isle thatched cottage. Or simply stroll along the quiet lanes behind the main road and admire the flower-bedecked homes and gardens.

As you arrive at Thornton-le-Dale from Pickering, look out on the left for Mathewsons garage, a family-run classic car auction business which shot to fame in 2019 when it became the star of ‘Bangers and Cash’, an observational TV show that takes viewers behind the scenes to follow the cars’ journey from dusty barn find to success under the auctioneer’s hammer.

The show features enigmatic garage boss Derek Mathewson and his family – have a look around the shop for motoring spares and souvenirs, and you may just spot him! Watch ‘Bangers and Cash’ on U&Yesterday TV, on Freeview channel 27, and on demand at u.co.uk.

Getting to Thornton-le-Dale is easy with Coastliner 840, from Leeds, Tadcaster, York, Malton, Pickering and Whitby. Buses in both directions use the same stop at the village green, where you can spot the Best Kept Village Trophy sign – another accolade for this pretty, unspoilt village.
