Burnley Bus Company celebrates 102nd birthday with incredible historic images

The Burnley Bus Company can trace its lineage all the way back to August 1924. That’s over a century of welcoming Burnley’s families, workers, and pupils on board – and a lot has changed in that time.
102 years ago, a bus operated by “Burnley Corporation Transport” left Rawtenstall and made its way along the cobbled roads of Lancashire towards Burnley Summit.
This was the first-ever bus service linking these two towns – and as it turns out, the start of a network that would one day come to be what is now the Burnley Bus Company!
To celebrate this network turning 102 – and in collaboration with the Transport Library, The Bus Archive, The Mark Page Collection, and The Derek Giles Collection – we have licensed a series of photographs from Burnley’s past.

Today, Burnley Bus Company operates across Lancashire and Yorkshire, with Burnley acting as the main hub for transport services to Manchester, Bury, Accrington, Clitheroe, Colne, Skipton, and Keighley.
The network might be larger, and the vehicles might be more advanced, but one thing that remains the same today as 102 years ago is the people.
Day in, day out, Burnley’s workers use their buses to commute to work, students get to school and back, and families reunite across the region. The same as they did all the way back in 1924!
