We're using temporary timetables. We're still running most of our buses, just not as often, as we focus on getting key workers to work

Apprentice Matthew and the #HarrogateElectrics shortlisted for Harrogate Awards!

1 month ago Thu 5th Mar 2020

Matthew Wallis, our Apprentice Engineer at Harrogate, has been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year in the Harrogate Excellence in Business Awards alongside the Harrogate Electrics buses in the Sustainability Award!

Matthew, 20, is a member of a team of seven engineers in Starbeck, and started with us in November 2017 on an IMI Vehicle Maintenance & Repair HV Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Together with his colleagues, Matthew helps maintain 65 modern, high spec vehicles with modern low emission diesel engines as well as state-of-the-art zero emission electric buses.

We put Matthew forward because he has grown to be a key member of our engineering team and built confidence alongside his communication and organisational skills. He has been described by his colleagues as at totally different person to when he first started concerning his abilities and attitude to work.

Matthew's excellent progression has led him to being nominated by his colleagues in the annual company-wide Amazing Awards for Engineer of the Year in which he also made the short-list and came second, receiving a Highly Commended Award.

Our Harrogate Electrics are eight next-generation zero-emission electric buses you'll see around town on the 2a and 2b to Bilton, 3 to Jennyfield and 6 to Pannal Ash.

Fuelled by a renewable energy contract, they really do remove emissions rather than moving them to another place.

Compared against the previous buses on these routes we are removing 9.2 tonnes of CO2 and 140kg og NOx from the air around Harrogate each week. As a result of this work and investment alongside partners, the government and supported by our customers, we have created the UK's first ever Low Emission Bus Town.

The #SundayFreeway initiative, where the Harrogate Electrics are free for everyone, every sunday has seen up to 90% increases in customers on Sundays, reducing the amount of cars making their way into Harrogate to the benefit of air quality and congestion as well as the town.

We're really proud of Matthew and our local team running the buses here in Harrogate every for making it onto the shortlist are looking forward to the big day on 2 April to find out if they're winners.
