Transdev Amazing Awards
Our annual celebration of our top performing colleagues.
They’re people with pride and passion for delivering our best service to thousands of our customers across the North of England – and every year, we salute the finest from our 10 companies in Yorkshire and Lancashire at our unique Amazing Awards.
Hosted by a TV celebrity, alongside BBC Look North legend Harry Gration as our Master of Ceremonies, the Amazing Awards is an evening of entertainment and celebration for our teams and their families as their guests.
Emanating from the National Science and Media Museum, colleagues are recognised across nine categories, each one celebrating the pinnacle of outstanding customer service or high individual and team performance.
Nominations are made by colleagues and customers in the months leading up to the event, and then judged by a combination of mystery travellers, independent industry experts and our senior leadership team.
The winners each receive a cash prize and trophy, with the hotly contested Driver of the Year award receiving the Pride of the North cup and £1,000 spending money.
Transdev CEO Alex Hornby says:
"I am so proud of what my colleagues achieve every day, and our Amazing Awards were created to ensure we recognise those exceptional individuals who earn the very best feedback from our customers and their peers.
"Our company is seen as one of the leading lights in our vast and competitive industry only because of the efforts and pride in our teams right across the North. We believe in three things – employing people who are happy to work with us, serving people who are proud to be our customers, and creating a business which is innovative and successful.
"We’re proud to celebrate everything that’s good about our amazing people who deliver the highest standard of service for our customers. Our Amazing Awards are our way of celebrating their skill and passion for delivering our signature brand of customer care, every single day.”
Let's take a look at our most recent winners
Engineer of the Year - Barry Stewart from The Burnley Bus Company
Often the unsung heroes of the business, our engineers truly help us keep the wheels turning. We have some exceptional talents in our garages and this award singles out the best. Barry is a hugely valued member of the engineering team here in Burnley. For the last two years additional buses have been looked after at the Queensgate depot where Barry works, and his worth ethic, high standards and commitment to the job have helped the whole team over this time. Barry makes a significant contribution to their exceptional MOT pass rate which has been the highest across the whole company in each of the last six years.
Depot of the Year - The Rosso depot team
All Transdev teams competed together over a wide range of criteria where the judges look at the raw performance statistics, as well as taking into account year on year improvements in each individual area. It’s a tough challenge to come out on top when so many areas are being considered, from reliability and cost management to customer satisfaction. As a company, Rosso came out on top and impressed the judges with their progress this year.
Customer Choice Award - Driver Stephanie Graham from The Keighley Bus Company
For the first time, we asked our customers to tell us their favourite drivers through online nominations, along with the reasons why. Bubbly, smiley and welcoming – Stephanie’s customers weren’t lacking for compliments when they nominated her. As well as all these kind words, customers also commented on Stephanie’s driving, in particular that she makes customers feel safe and comfortable on their journey.
Team of the Year - The 36 Driving Team
In a company packed with 1,250 people, team work matters. This award recognises how great individual talents come together to create exceptional results and understanding of a share goal.
Customer numbers continue to grow on the 36 and new customers say they stay because they’re so well looked after by the driving team. They’re friendly, smart, and reliable and have gone the extra mile this year to deal with the difficulties of major roadworks in Leeds as well as the challenges – and thousands of extra customers – during the UCI world cycling event in Harrogate.
Hero of the Year - Driver Mick Cummings from The Burnley Bus Company
We’ve got many great people who do amazing things, but the shortlisted heroes have proven their determination to go the extra mile when the situation demanded it. One of Mick’s elderly passengers slipped while trying to board his bus and suffered a serious leg injury. She was heavily bleeding and Mick tried to stem the blood whilst calling the ambulance. If that wasn’t enough, Mick then visited her in hospital with flowers and kept in touch to make sure she was recovering and feeling better.
Driver of the Year - Fungai Mbavarira from Rosso
This award is for the very best of the best, from the shortlist of this year’s Pride of the North Cup winners. They are judged on a range of disciplines from the smartness of their uniform to a driving style that means it’s comfortable for all passengers. The judges, having independently audited all of the drivers nominated, said Fungai’s natural warmth and cheerful manner light up the bus and create that extra spark needed to nudge ahead of the rest. His smiling welcome creates an outstanding first impression and coupled with immaculate presentation and a smooth and progressive drive, this was an unbeatable all round performance.
Rising Star - Lee Wardle, Duty Manager for Rosso
This category looked for an exceptional colleague who, despite being with us for a short time, has impressed and who we will expect to progress to even greater things. Lee is one of our talented Duty Managers and works at the Rochdale depot. He has really stepped up this past year, taking on many new challenges as those around him have moved into different roles. Rosso has had a very busy year and Lee’s attitude and dedication has been second-to-none, no matter what has been asked of him.
Eco Champion - Mohsin Malek from The Blackburn Bus Company
Our driver Mohsin Malek won the Eco Champion award that sees the drivers with the leading telematics scores from each depot compete for a prize celebrating the highest performing, most environmentally conscious and safe driver from across Transdev. Mohsin makes the effort to review every trip and achieve a perfect score, which means he’s made the shortlist as Blackburn’s nominee for the past three years, also winning in 2018!
Lifetime Star - Sheraz Chopdat, Duty Manager from The Blackburn Bus Company
This award is for appreciating the many long-serving colleagues we are blessed with, the candidates are singled out for their consistency of performance and continued efforts, day after day, to offer their best. Sheraz, with 32 years of experience, is a much loved member of the Blackburn team and goes out of his way to do more than just what the job entails. Whether it’s as simple as helping a colleague get to work on time on a difficult morning, or instilling calmness in others when things get tough, Sheraz sets the best example possible.
