Let's meet Alex

Alex and buses have never been far apart – he began his career at the tender age of 15, on work experience at his local bus depot in Liverpool, earning his bus driving licence while studying at university.

Alex’s journey with Transdev began in January 2015, initially as Managing Director for the first six months, then in his current role as our CEO. He says his job is “the best in the world – I get to be part of a great team, running buses in the best part of the world, and a very interested and supportive owner who lets us deliver the best solutions for customers and stakeholders.

And he loves to travel: “While I’m often found in our shared offices in Starbeck, Harrogate, I’m usually around the network somewhere – creating plans with our commercial team, monitoring our service delivery standards and people management with operations and engineering teams at depots, or strategising with our leadership team.

“I also engage with local councils and national Government and am often busy looking through customer feedback to consider how we can do things better. No two days are ever the same, and I love the variety and our ability to make things better, and to get on with things and deliver quickly.”

Alex says he enjoys the variety of leading our business: “I’m better when I’m around people”, he says. “Be it our colleagues, partners or our customers, when I’m talking and listening and helping to make things as best as they can be – that’s when I’m happiest.”

As our CEO, Alex takes pride in how our teams come together to launch new products and amaze our customers – people serving people. “The new buses on the 36, Witchway, Cityzap and Harrogate Electrics are proud moments, as are our annual Amazing Awards, Transdev Honours and Celebration of Service Awards when we thank our colleagues and their families – they’re often the highlight of my year.”

Asked how colleagues would describe him, Alex says: “I dread to think! Passionate, a bit crazy and excitable, always wanting us all to be our best – probably a bit demanding at times, but always with my feet on the ground. And always, grateful and appreciative for hard work.”

Away from work, Alex has two more people to keep happy: “My very patient wife and nine-year-old son, who is growing up far too quickly! We always like gallivanting and making the most of the great surroundings we are lucky to live in – we don’t like sitting still!

“I’ve always had a fascination for transport since the age of four and enjoy travelling and experiencing new places – alongside good friends, great food and craft beer!”

As a seasoned traveller, Alex chooses The Big Apple – New York City as his favourite destination – “the buzz and life of that place never fails to amaze me” – and as a proud Liverpudlian, he names Sir Paul McCartney as his number one choice of live music performer.

“I acted as Paul as a 10-year-old in a BBC documentary, met him several times and that’s always stuck with me” says Alex. “I’ve seen Macca in concert now four times, and he never fails. A 40-track set for an over 70-year-old, a member of the best band in the world – a never to be repeated legend.”
